The match started with both teams playing aggressively, as Dean Howell took an out swinging corner kick in the 1st minute that brought the ball to the far post. Kyle McFadzean headed the ball firmly but John Brayford was present to block it.
In the 3rd minute, Sergio Torres came up with a fair drive and ended up taking the shot himself with his right foot; however, the shot was wide, which was followed by a foul from Kyle McFadzean asking Robbie Savage to take the free kick.
The next piece of action came during the 7th minute when Robbie Savage struck a free kick that brought open play. Ultimately, his men were not able to posses the ball long enough and provide end result.
A minute later Michel Kuipers made a ruthless tackle on Chris Porter, which saw the referee point to the spot without hesitation. Kris Commons came forth to take the penalty kick, but amazingly goalkeeper Michel Kuipers made a brilliant save.
After this fiasco, both teams adopted a midfield role for their game until the 14th minute where a free kick from Dean Howell came to Kyle McFadzean who headed it off target.
In the 16th minute, Matthew Tubbs stuck a firm shot but it was blocked by Shaun Barker. Dean Howell took charge with his in swinging strike to the far post nearly making it happen for Crawley Town.
In the 19th minute, Stephen Bywater and Paul Green showed chemistry, but without end result.  During the 26th minute came the ultimate heart-stopper with a free kick from Stephen Bywater. Scott Neilson charged to head the ball and succeeded, but the framework came in between drawing first blood; hence, the board still showed nil all.
In the 29th minute, it was Stephen Bywater again who took the free kick. The ball eventually travelled to Craig McAllister, who struck it into the bottom right corner from 6 yards and in effect, Crawley Town had a 1-goal lead.
First yellow card of the match came after 35 minutes when James Bailey tackled Scott Neilson unfairly. Dean Howell took the resulting free kick but to no avail. In the dying moments of the match, proceeding became much more intense as both teams came forth with waves of attack.
That also led to frustration in which Matthew Tubbs got caught up, as he recklessly tackled Robbie Savage in the 45th minute. Gareth Roberts took the free kick and a last play before break was witnessed.
