I just filled out my FAFSA today and I was wondering if they audit every application, or just the ones that show up suspicious on their computers? or how does it work? and what would probably happen if you were audited and they caught you lying?

  1. OMG i hope you did not lie. but they only review some of them. if its a prob, they will tell you

    but...

$20, 000 big ones for fraud

  2. They do not audit every application - they select some at random and some that are flagged as suspicious.  I was audited twice but was able to verify everything so it was no problem whatsoever.

If you accidentally made a mistake (or on purpose and now wish to correct it) wait to receive your SAR and make any changes that you need to.

  3. About 30% of the applications are selected for verification randomly.

But there are a few things that will flag it automatically to cause you to be "selected for verification".

Read the disclaimer right before you entered your PIN (signed) and it will tell you exactly what will happen if you lie.. it says it - right there in black and white.
