  1. Until you can answer "YES" to one of the following questions, you are considered 'Dependent' for education purposes.  The year of birth changes with each new year of the FAFSA:

    Dependency Status Worksheet

Were you born before January 1, 1985 (question 48)?

At the beginning of the school year 2008-2009 will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.) (question 49)?

As of today are you married? (Answer "Yes" if you are separated, but not divorced.) (question 50)

Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you (question 51)?

Do you have dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2009 (question 52)?

Are (a) both of your parents deceased, or (b) are you (or were you until age 18) a ward or dependent of the court (question 53)?

Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training (question 54)?

Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces (question 55)?

These are federal regulations and for your circumstances there is no getting around it.  Sorry. :(

    Good Luck to you.

  2. if you do your own taxes and you are declared as independent then you don't need your parents

  3. I'm 21 I live on my own and I'm independent. I don't use my parents income for my financial aid. But here's the catch....I have a baby. So actually my Mom did claim me on her taxes last year (my son was born end of December) but now I'm considered independent because my Mother does not in anyway have to support my son. If you don't have a kid then chances are you will have to include your parents income. Some schools have forms you can fill out that state you are independent when Financial Aid considers you Dependent. That is just a question you have to ask the school you are wanting to attend.

  4. No matter where you live, FAFSA is only concerned about your parents income.  This applies until you are 24 years old.

*You are wrong It's me. absolutely wrong.  FAFSA considers the parents responsible for the student until the age of 24.  The student paying taxes has nothing to do with it. I know this for a fact as I have a 22 year old in college who owns her own condo.  She still has to get info about her parents every year for FAFSA. She also works.
