FAFSA question 80 about parents' income tax?

For question 80 "Enter the amount of your parents' income tax for 2007 (question 80)", is my parents' income tax for 2007 just federal withheld or both federal and state withheld together?

  1. They want your parents tax liability for 07.  This is NOT the amount that was withheld on their W2s.  It is also not the amount your parents had to pay or received after filing taxes for that year.  

    To get the correct info on this question you need to figure out which tax form they filed and then get the amount of that particular line number (the line numbers you are suppose to be looking at are listed on the fafsa form).  Usually it says "Total Tax" on that line on the tax form.
