I need help. Im living overseas and the deadline is diff. for our taxes over here. My parents dont file the taxes here..my dads job does. I filled out a FAFSA and its processed. I have to make corrections once it is actually filed. Does that mean I cant go to school until then? Or can I just say that they've been filed and make corrections later? My dads job hasnt given any feedback on the situation and Im kind of lost.

  1. Call FAFSA and ask them: 1-800-4-FED-AID or http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Maybe you could call your school too?

  2. In the form there is a box to say whether you or your parents have filed a tax return yet. Select "will file" and when you get the information, just put it in. Or the school will ask for it by a certain date.

Most schools will not give you aid until the file is complete (their file and the FAFSA) but what usually happens is you get the aid towards the end of the semester, in a refund check (that's what happened to me) so plan on having some money to cover school costs in case the file isn't complete by the time school begins.

  3. You have to talk to your financial aid office.  If you and/or your parents aren't filing an actual 1040, then they may take other income verification from you, like the equivalent of a W2.

Also, eventhough the deadline overseas is different, doesn't it work like in the US, you can always file them early, so go ahead and get it done so that you can make the necessary corrections to your FAFSA.

Either way, you need to talk to your school , as each school sets up its own policies for performing verification once they receive the FAFSA.  The decision as to what can be turned and what delays you will face are between you and your school, contacting FAFSA in this situation will not help you.

  4. The USA tax deadline is the same no matter where you live if he is doing a USA tax form.

Also, FAFSA is based on the previous years income not the current one, so the info he is should use should have already been filed with the government.  If he's using a current year, he's not using the correct info.  He needs to go back to last years "tax form" equivalent in that country or the USA tax form and get the info and income off that and enter it on the fafsa.. he or you will have to change the currency to US dollars.

Call 1-800-4FED AID if you have more questions.

  5. You should be able to go to school, but your financial aid awards may be delayed until you are able to make corrections to your FAFSA.

The best place to go for an answer would be the financial aid office for the school of your choice.
