FC Barcelona Regal humiliate Union Olimpija 72-46: Euroleague Recap
FC Barcelona Regal is the team to watch out for in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague 2011.
They have crushed each and every team they have faced so far and last night they were no different as they extended their unbeaten record to 6-0 after hammering Union Olimpija 72-46 in a historical game.
Historical, because after accumulating 14 points in this very game, their star player Juan Carlos Navarro surpassed Marcus Brown to become the Euroleague all time top scorer.
He now has 2716 points in the league and looks like he will maintain the record for a long time because there is some more basketball left in him and if he stays fit, he might cross 3000 points by the end of his successful career.
Barcelona coach, Xavier Pascual, paying tribute to the big man and highlighting the particulars of the game added
“(Juan Carlos Navarro) has this scoring record and he’s a generous player who passes the ball well as soon as he touches it. What’s more, he looks for his shot relatively little, so what he’s accomplished has great merit. We didn’t
let Olimpija play its usual game. We had a lot of speed, and up to the end of the third quarter we played sensationally, especially in the third, and in the final stretch we slipped a bit but that’s normal after an accumulation of games”
Apart from Navarro, Marcelinho Huertas and Kosta Perovic were the other two players who dominated Barca’s offense and finished with 12 points each.
From Olimpija, only two players, Danny Green (10) and Aleksandar Capin (10) managed to end with scores in double figures.
Barcelona stormed into the court with an 11 point blitz to take their team into a commanding position. This early onslaught pushed Union to the back foot and despite fighting hard in the ensuing frame, by the end of the first quarter;
they found themselves trailing behind 23-14.
Aleksandar Capin provided some respite to the Olimpija by scoring two free throws to reduce the deficit to 23-16, however Barcelona were on a role and in no time, they lifted the lead to double figures. Navarro failed to make any
impact in the quarter but other players such as Pete Mickeal and Boniface Ndong continued the onslaught and made sure Barcelona finished the first half with a mammoth 14 point lead 40-26.
Olimpija needed to score quickly to give themselves any chance of winning, but unfortunately for them, their players failed to find baskets and counter Barca who were scoring at a fiery rapid rate. A 19-2 run by Barca that started
midway through the frame decided the fate of the game as their lead mounted to massive 31 points 63-32.
The last quarter was a mere formality and despite an 8-0 spurt in the last few minutes, Olimpija found themselves 26 points short on a night, they will quickly want to erase from their memories.
