FC Barcelona sign David Villa
La Liga champions Barcelona have signed Spain striker David Villa from debt-ridden Valencia for €40million (around £34.2million).
The 28-year-old forward, who was the top scorer in his country’s successful Euro 2008 campaign, has plundered 36 goals in 55 matches for his country, and moves to Barça after hitting 107 goals in 166 La Liga games for Valencia.
Widely recognised as one of the game’s leading strikers, the former Sporting Gijón and Zaragoza frontman has been tipped to leave Valencia ever since the extent of their financial problems were laid bare last season, but despite being linked with moves to several big clubs in England, he expressed a desire to stay in his native Spain, and after appearing to be close to a move to Real Madrid last summer, he has now chosen Barça.
The Catalan club will unveil him as their new signing on Friday after a routine medical, and will then continue their pursuit of Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas, another Spanish star who is expected to complete a move to Barça in the coming weeks.
