The former FC Zwolle midfielder replaces Pieter Huistra, who was sacked from his managerial post earlier this month following the club’s poor performances in the 2011/12 Eredivisie season.
Reports from Eurborg Stadion confirm that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robert-c31222 Maaskant as their new head coach on a one-year deal.
The 43-year-old has replaced Pieter Huistra, who was dismissed from his head coach position following a poor 2011/12 campaign. The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 winger took over the managerial hot seat at Euroborg Stadion in the summer of 2010, and managed to guide his
side to an impressive fifth place finish.
The Green-White-Army’s faithful and the club management were expecting their side to go one step further in the 2011/12 season, but Huistra failed to live up to the expectations and eventually lost his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684.
Maaskant, who started his managerial career in the summer of 1999 at RBC Roosendaal, had successful spells at Go Ahead Eagles, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/NAC-Breda-c39983 and Wisla Krakow respectively.
The Dutch trainer has managed to win silverware only at Stadion im Henryka Reymana, when he guided Biała Gwiazda to lift the Ekstraklasa title in the 2010/11 season. However, his experience to grind out decent results with limited resources convinced the
Groningen management to appoint the former FC Zwolle midfielder as their new manager.
Pride of the North technical director, Henk Veldmate, has revealed that his side wanted to lure a coach to Euroborg Stadion, who does not belong from Groningen.
“After the departure of Pieter Huistra, we had a clear preference for a candidate from outside of the club. We believe our current situation calls for a sporting breath of fresh air and we think, as a coach and a person, Robert Maaskant is the right man
to bring us that. He has extensive experience at the highest level and that may be of value for our squad”, Veldmate was quoted as saying to the club’s official website.
Maaskant, who is reportedly expected to join up his new employers in June, would be hoping that he could manage to lead his new club to decent finish in his debut season.
