FC Internazionale’s Wesley Sneijder suffers from anaemia
FC Internazionale’s mercurial midfielder Wesley Sneijder has been diagnosed with anaemia.
Sneijder passed out at the half time interval in Inter’s draw with Brescia Calcio in the Italian Serie A. The Dutch maestro feels exhausted after being part of a long 2009/2010 season with Inter Milan and then his national team.
He managed to score the treble with Inter where he managed to win the Italian Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League.
Wesley continued his magnificent form in the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa, scoring 5 goals for the Netherlands along the road to the final. The midfielder helped his team knock out World Cup favourites Brazil in the
quarters, before losing to Spain in the final. The midfielder from The Netherlands finished as the leading goal-scorer of the tournament along with Diego Forlan (Uruguay), Thomas Muller (Germany) and David Villa (Spain).
The former Real Madrid and FC Ajax player is also among the 23-man list selected for the inaugural FIFA Ballon d’Or, and is the hot favourite to scoop the award.
The Dutchman’s busy summer did not end at the World Cup, and a week after the final, he tied the knot with his girlfriend Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen.
Describing the incident that happened during the game, he said, “In the changing room I got sick and passed out briefly. My heart and blood pressure were checked immediately. Later I travelled to The Netherlands for a second opinion.
The conclusion was that I have anaemia and my whole body is exhausted.”
Although no official statement has been issued from Inter on the matter, Sneijder was left out of the squad for the trip away to US Lecce on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old has also revealed that his former boss at Inter, Jose Mourinho wanted him to follow his footsteps and head to Madrid. However, Wesley decided against the move and asserted his commitment to the Italian
champions.
Sneijder said, “Of course Mourinho has tried to make me leave for Real. We have stayed in touch. But it's impossible. I don't want to go back to a club who treated me in this way. I can't act as if nothing happened. For me, Madrid
is ancient history. I will never play for Real again.”
In 2009, Real Madrid made it clear to the player that his services were no longer required by the club, which resulted in a €15 million switch to Inter Milan. It is easy to understand that there is little love lost between the
two parties.
Sneijder has struggled with his form this season and his illness is the latest in a series of injuries and medical problems for Inter Milan. Walter Samuel is also likely to miss the rest of the season after the centre-back damaged
his knee ligaments against Brescia, while Brazilian defender Maicon is out after suffering a thigh injury. Esteban Cambiasso, Julio Cesar, Sulley Muntari and Thiago Motta are others among the long term absentees through injuries.
