Lukas Podolski’s comments in a recent interview have angered the club and the side look to take disciplinary action against the striker.
The former Bayern Munich striker claimed in a recent interview to a newspaper that FC Koln have not kept their promises made to him which is why the results have been poor recently. He stated that the club had assured him of building
a team around him and that there will be additions in the January transfer window, none of which has happened.
Club general manager Claus Horstmann claimed that every player has the right to express his thoughts but to openly criticize your club is not good. He stated that Podolski is a senior member of the side and a lot better is expected
of him.
“Of course such a high-profile player has every right to speak out publicly, but we are surprised about the timing and the content of an interview on the day in which we had a very important game against Hamburg,” he was quoted
as saying in an interview.
Horstmann stated that Podolski has been involved in such situations in the past and insisted that he should avoid passing comments. He claimed that the player should speak with his performances and he should follow certain norms
of the club.
“It is not the first time that such a situation has arisen. We have got to make it clear what rights and duties the players have and that Lukas must respect them,” he continued.
The general manager added that FC Koln will try their best to make sure Podolski stays at the club. He admitted that the priority would be to keep the player but admitted that options can be considered once the season ends.
“Our position and our priority to extend his contract as soon as possible remains unaltered,” he concluded.
