Former Porto and Algerian star, Rabah Madjer, has commented on the title-race in the Primeira Liga. The ex-striker said that although Sporting had considerably improved, for him the Portistas and Benfica will be the ones fighting it out for supremacy.
One of the most famous players of all time to don the Algerian jersey, Rabah Madjer, has seen it all during his seventeen years in the game.
The attacker spent most of his best years at Estadio do Dragao and is remembered by the Dragons for his late equalizer against Bayern Munich in the European cup final.
He was also an instrumental part of the Desert Warriors and is their leading goal-scorer.
Currently working as a consultant for Al Jazeera, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Al-Rayyan-c38354 boss commented on this season’s title race in Liga Sagres and said that either Porto or Benfica would end up with the trophy despite Sporting’s considerable spending in the summer.
The Lions spent hefty amounts on luring quality players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oguchi-Onyewu-c28332 to Estadio Jose Alvalade, but the 52-year-old believes that they still don’t have what it takes to become the champions.
“FC Porto and Benfica, no doubt. Porto, at one point seemed that they would drop but they have learned to overcome difficulties and it seems to me, contrary to what some think, they are very strong.”
He also added that the Eagles were looking like a better team this time around and would provide stiff competition to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vitor-c36281 Pereira’s side, but he hoped that the current champions would retain their title.
“Benfica seems more cohesive unit and more robust than a year ago. Fantastic run in the Champions League for example. But the league will be fierce. There is much rivalry and it will remain until late this season. But in the end, I hope that Porto will be
the ones smiling,” Rabah Madjer was quoted as saying.
With the campaign reaching the half way mark, both Porto and Benfica find themselves locked in a tight battle with all points square. The second half of the term will be quite crucial for both teams and if one of them slips up, the other is likely to be
celebrating in May.
