http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/SL-Benfica-c40542 went head-to-head in the most anticipated fixture of the Portuguese Primeira Liga calendar. After 90 minutes of cagey action, the game failed to produce a winner and the spoils were shared in a 2-2 draw.
In the aftermath of the game, the Portistas forward, Kleber, has claimed that although his side deserved the three points against Benfica, they were not able to get a fair result and now have to focus on their upcoming task against Otelul Galati.
Vitor Pereira’s men played host to Benfica yesterday at Estadio do Dragao, in the first Classico of the season and the match lived up to its hype with both sides playing an attacking game.
The high flying Eagles had momentum behind them yesterday but were unable to make much of an impact in the first half, in which the Portistas orchestrated the proceedings.
Porto were absolutely ruthless in the opening 45 minutes and frustrated their opponents by keeping the ball. They were also rewarded for their efforts, when Kleber nodded in a header and sent the stadium into delirium.
Controversy followed on 43 minutes as Oscar Cardozo was only shown a yellow for his cynical tackle and was kept on the field by the referee. The decision came back to haunt the home side, as the Paraguayan levelled the score after the break.
As the game went on, the champions thought they had secured all three points when Nicolas Otamendi netted an easy tap-in but the finale was saved for the end.
A build-up of intricate passing saw http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Saviola-c18090 play a sumptuous pass to Nicolas Gaitan, who equalled the quality of the through ball with an expertly taken finish that struck the cross bar and went in, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.
Following the final whistle, many have complained that the officials were quite lenient on Cardozo and that Porto should have put the game to bed early on.
One of the many who have commented is Dragao attacker, Kleber, who claims that his side should have won the game.
"I think we deserved to win tonight's game. In the first part we were superior, I don’t even know if Benfica reached our goal before the break. But they eventually to scored. It was a like bucket of cold water, but now we have to raise our head and move
on.” He said.
The front-man also revealed that to him, getting on the score sheet was not as important as gaining a result for the club and that teamwork was always ranked higher than individual feats.
"The most important is the result and display together. No matter if I scored or not, but the collective effort is always worth highlighting,” Kleber was quoted as saying.
FC Porto can now turn their attention to their upcoming game, which is an away trip to Otelul Galati in the UEFA Champions League.
