FC Porto won against Vitoria Guimarães on a very doubtful goal, says Benfica coach Jorge Jesus
Benfica boss http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 won their opening fixture via a doubtful penalty and that the race to win the Portuguese Primeira Liga will be decided later on and not in the early matches.
FC Porto started the defence of their crown with a nervy win over their Super Cup opponents, Vitoria Guimarães, with star striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hulk-c16436 netting the only goal from the penalty spot.
The Portuguese champions looked like a shadow of the side that won the quadruple last season and were indeed lucky to grind out three points at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques.
While they did manage to eventually win the match, it was not without controversy as the referee awarded the visitors a penalty, putting the hopes of an unfancied upset to bed. While some have moved on from the incident, Benfica managed Jorge Jesus is still
ruing his side’s draw and the fact that their rivals started their season with a win.
Speaking to reporters, the tactician claimed that the Portistas were given a soft penalty and that eventually allowed them to win their very first fixture.
“FC Porto won with a very doubtful goal. For me there was no penalty and it should not have been given.”
Jesus also added that he was convinced that the title race would be even closer this year but reiterated that the current results were far from being the indicator on who will lift the trophy come May.
"The championships are not won in the early days.”
“I think the league will be stronger this year. Porto are the same but Benfica and Sporting are stronger and wants to be even more stronger. The other teams will also be much better; will make the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 of the big three harder. I think the championship will
be more balanced and stronger,” the 57-year-old was quoted as saying.
With FC Porto losing their main forward http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Radamel-Falcao-c30276 in a €52 million deal to Atletico Madrid, it remains to been seen whether they can hang on to their throne or succumb to the efforts of Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.
