FC Twente Enschede manager, Co Adriaanse, has expressed his delight over the 2-1 win against Ajax Amsterdam in the Johan Cruijff Shield match. The game was staged at Amsterdam Arena on Saturday, July 30. Even though Adriaanse’s men struggled to perform on
the pitch, they eventually emerged victorious by the end of the 90 minutes.
The Tukkers started the match aggressively in front of a packed house, but the Amsterdammers had the first real goalscoring opportunity in the eighth minute. The Twente goalkeeper deflected a Miralem Sulejmani’s shot into the path of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christian-Eriksen-c9074, but
the Danish ace’s header ricocheted off the crossbar for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Peter-Wisgerhof-c29829 to clear the ball.
In the 21st minute, the visitors were awarded a spot-kick following Theo Janssen’s foul inside the box on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marc-Janko-c23484 slotted the ball coolly into the net from 12 yards out to give his team a 1-0 lead over the home side.
Ajax dominated the rest of the proceedings in the opening half, but were unable to find the equaliser. Twente received a blow just after the break when Steven Berghuis received his second yellow card of the evening, leaving the visitors down to ten men.
Ajax duly took advantage of their numerical superiority levelled the score-line in the 54th minute through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toby-Alderweireld-c35183, whose powered shot crossed the line via the crossbar.
However, Bryan Ruiz sealed the game in the 68th minute through a left-footed shot from 20 yards that left http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kenneth-Vermeer-c20618 with no chance in the goal.
Co Adriaanse was pleased after winning the first piece of silverware of the new season. However, the vastly experienced trainer revealed in the post match press conference that his side played erratically, though, he showered praise on Ruiz for delivering
an impressive performance.
“Winning obviously pleases me a lot, but the way we did it pleases me a lot less. I like to play attacking, attractive football, but today we didn't do that. Bryan Ruiz was the only one who kept the ball in the second half, and he scored the winner. Nevertheless,
I can state one sentence; the best football does not always win”, Adriaanse said while talking to the journalists.
The Dutch trainer then went on reveal that Ruiz is the only player who always remains calm.
“He is one of the few players who stay calm in difficult situations. He is that kind of player who can himself decide a game and he has proven it before”, Adriaanse concluded.
Twente would commence their 2011/12 Eredivisie campaign against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/NAC-Breda-c39983 at Rat Velregh Stadion on Sunday, August 7.
