The young hit-man, who started his professional career at De Graafschap in the 2008/09 season, arrived at the Tukkers in the summer of 2009 after playing 14 Eredivisie matches while donning the jersey of the Super Farmers.
The promising striker faced difficulties in cementing his place in the starting line-up at the start in Enschede. However, the Dutchman has remained the first-choice No. 9 at De Grolsch Veste for the past couple of seasons.
De Jong has thus far represented the Tukkers in 76 league matches, and has netted 39 goals while setting up plenty more along the way.
His impressive performances have garnered him interest from several top European clubs including the likes of Newcastle United, Liverpool and Borussia Monchengladbach, who are keen to acquire his signature before the season kicks-off.
However, McClaren has made it clear that he does not want to see the young striker move away from De Grolsch Veste this summer.
“The club know what I think about it. Luuk de Jong would stay if it were up to me, unless stupid money is offered. In addition, only since the winter of last season, Luuk has been playing as a number 9. He must have at least one
full season playing as a real striker to become a top player at a big club”, the former England boss was quoted as saying to the media.
FC Twente recently turned down an offer of 10 million Euros from Newcastle for the Dutch international, as the Eredivisie outfit have made it clear that they will not let go of their prized asset for anything less than 15 million
Euros.
