FC Twente manager Michel Preud’homme believes his side’s Europa League campaign is as good as over
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Villarreal-CF-c40899 thrashed his side 5-1 in the first leg of the quarter-final
at El Madrigal on Thursday, 7 April.
Preud’homme admits that his tie against the Spanish outfit is as good as over. The tactician defended his controversial decision to go into the tie with a 3-4-3 formation against the Yellow Submarines, after the Tukkers were humiliated to a 5-1 defeat.
Preud’homme said, “The thing that is we were good in the first quarter in terms of our positioning. We conceded two goals and that was unacceptable. Then everything went wrong in terms of our shape. We want to avoid the danger of their two strikers and counter
them with our three central defenders but still they were able to make the difference.”
“We had tried it once before in Bremen. It was good at the beginning. Thereafter things went a bit differently, but that was to do with the quality of the opponent. We never reached our level and Villarreal were very good,” he concluded.
The home side started the match with an aggressive frame of mind and were rewarded with a good approach in the first half. They scored three goals in the first 45 minutes of the match. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-Marchena-c8481 opened the score line for the Yellow Submarines in the
22nd minute, when Jose http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-c23383 Catala flicked the corner at the near post and Marchena had the simple task of heading the ball into the net.
After the home side broke the dead-lock, they never looked back and asserted constant pressure on the Tukkers back line, which looked vulnerable for the entire 90 minutes in this encounter. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Borja-Valero-c7889 doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, when
he powered a low shot past the Tukkers gloves man, Nikolay Mihailov. Nilmar Honorato da Silva made it look too easy for the Yellow Submarines, when the prolific striker added the third goal in the stoppage time of the first half to read the score 3-0.
The Tukkers never managed to find a way to sneak back into the game. Things were made much harder for the visiting side, when the Yellow Submarines scored their fourth goal in the 55th minute through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nilmar-c28044 made it 5-0 when he
scored his second goal of the match in the 80th minute. The Tukkers managed to find their way through the Yellow Submarines strong defence in the injury time, when Mark Janko headed one into the net past Diego Lopez just before the final whistle.
Preud’homme believes that his side’s chances are now improbable to progress through to the semi-finals of the Europe’s secondary club competition. However, the Tukkers have to give their best performance if they have any ambition to overturn the four goals
deficit in the second leg. The return leg will be played at De Grolsch Veste on Thursday, 14 April.
