Despite facing the prospects of winning the golden boot, the 21-year-old has insisted that he only wants to win.
The Dutch International has not ruled out the possibility of winning Dutch Championship Top Scorer award. However, he has made it clear that it is certainly not an obsession.
“I have liked my goals from the beginning. I know there is a chance that I become top scorer, but it is not an obsession. I only want my side to win every game”, De Jong was quoted as saying to Voetbal International.
The 21-year-old then went on to assert that a striker’s role is more than scoring goals, and quoted the example of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who has scored 30 goals while setting up a further nine in 25 La Liga appearances.
“A striker is important for the team, but not only for scoring goals. He must have the ability to set up his teammates as well. I am a striker, and I try to play for the team. Just like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296. You must have a good head”, De Jong
concluded.
The 21-year-old striker arrived at De Grolsch Veste in the summer of 2009 after making 14 appearances for De Graafschap. The 2010/11 term, however, was his breakthrough season.
He scored 12 goals while setting up nine more in 32 League appearances, and his impressive form has not dropped a bit coming into this season.
De Jong’s good performances have garnered him interest from a host of elite European clubs. Although the youngster has an ongoing contract that runs until the summer of 2014, it seems unlikely that he would play out his contract at De Grolsch Veste.
