FC Twente Enschede’s hopes of participating in UEFA Europa League next season ended, following their 1-0 loss at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/RKC-Waalwijk-c40370 in the return leg at De Grolsch Veste on Sunday, May 13.
Both sides played a 1-1 stalemate in the first-leg of the play-offs at Mandemakers Stadion on Friday, May 11.
Steve McClaren, the Tukkers head coach, was extremely disappointed, and expressed his frustration following his side’s poor showings in the final weeks of the 2011/12 season.
“I have not felt so much disappointed since I am involved with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 and were one of the favourites to win the title. After that win, we completely faltered”,
McClaren was quoted as saying to Voetbal International.
The English trainer went on to admit that they have nobody to blame for the result but themselves.
“Of course, this was our 54th game of the season. We had to deal with injuries and fatigue. However, you cannot end the season in such a disappointing manner. There is certainly something wrong. We have only ourselves
to blame. We have disappointed ourselves and most importantly our fans. This should never happen again”, McClaren concluded.
After a 1-1 draw in the first-leg, the Tukkers needed a win in the return leg at home to keep their hopes of playing in the Europe’s second tier competition next term alive, and they started the match brightly.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Denny-Landzaat-c10934 missed a sitter, moments later, when he headed a Nacer Chadli cross out for a goal kick from close
range.
The Tukkers failed to create anything of note in the remaining action of the opening half. After the interval, RKC started to show improvement in their game, but failed to test the home side goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sander-Boschker-c32440.
In the 84th minute, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Furkan-Alakmak-c14245 silenced the home crowd with a stunning goal with his first involvement of the game. The 20-year-old came on the pitch in the 83rd minute, and helped his side to a shocking
1-0 win over the hosts.
