FF trade! Brett Favre for Selvin Young?

assuming favre DOES come back (despite reports of him considering staying retired as of august 1st)....is this a pretty good trade. I mean, considering all the question marks with favre (will he even come back, will he start, will he even be effective anymore, etc.) it seems tempting to sell favre while the stock it up.

ten points for best answer.

  1. It all depends on who's on your team right now.

If you need help or are unsure of your QB position right now, keep Favre. I don't think he will stay retired for a payout. He doesn't seem to be too concerned about public opinion, but taking 20 million to stay retired seems almost like blackmail and I think that would tarnish his image.

I think he is still considering his options right now and is seriously considering going to the Jets. The Jets have loaded their O-Line with talent. They added ex-GB Bubba Franks to a solid corp including Coles and Cotchery and have added depth at RB with T. Jones, Leon Washington and Jesse Chatman. They also brought in Richardson as a FB so teams will have to respect the run against them.

And if not the Jets, GB is being forced to consider having to trade Favre to MIN or CHI. MIN would be great for Favre with familiar coaching, maybe the best tandem of RB's and solid Defense. I think the WR options are worse in MIN compared to NYJ (but better than CHI) but Favre has always had a knack to quickly develop the talent around him.

Selvin Young is inside the Denver RB mystique. Early word is that the rookie Torain is looking really good (same kind of news that we heard about Young last year). I think Young will begin the year as the starter and should have a quick start against an easy schedule, so you may be able to use him as trade bait early. I also think he will be in a RBBC at some point with Pittman and Torain so will not be reliable all year.

If you need the help at RB go with Young but be prepared to trade him at some point. If you want to do risk/reward, wait and keep Favre, if he does sign with another team, his value will skyrocket and you should be able to get a solid RB from a team that is loaded at RB because they waited on QB.

  2. This depends on a few things:

    1)  Assuming you have Favre, what QB does the owner of Selvin Young have?  If it is someone like a Brady/P. Manning, or a Drew Brees, chances are this is not going to work.

    2)  Does the owner who has Young have enough depth at RB that you think would justify him taking a QB to weaken his RB corp.?

    3)  If possible, pick up Ryan Torrain if he is a FA.  He will most likely be the primary backup in Denver, so either you will have Young's backup if the trade goes through, or you can use Torrain as trade bait or a starter if he is promoted (which happens in Denver all of the time).

Just my $0.02.  But quite frankly, if you came to me with this offer, I would reject it on the spot, but that is just me.  Good luck.

  3. Hot off the press, Favre has been texting to his GM that he will probebly take a settlement to retire. Favre stated that it would be a respectable way to get out. Trade him while he still has value. Young will be the starter!
