  1. As you go into perimenopause (about 10 years before menopause), your fsh begins to raise due to your decreasing number of eggs and/or the quality of the eggs decreases.  The brain realizes the follicles in the ovaries aren't responding (through a feedback system of other hormones) so it produces more fsh to stimulate the ovaries to get an egg to respond.  After menopause the levels go up above 20.

Young women have levels under 6

Levels between 7-10 = you'll have a hard to conceiving but can conceive.

Levels 11-14= Possible to conceive but takes longer and miscarriage rates go up.  You'll may have to be stimulate by medicine to conceive.  Most ivf clinics do see pregnancies up to level 14.

Above 14= Conception is rare, miscarriage rates are high (about 50%)and getting ivf help is very difficult.

All labs are different but this is the scale most ivf clinics use.

The problem with the home menopause testers is that they test for high levels of fsh (menopause levels).  A serum (blood) fsh test done on cycle day 3 will tell you more accurately where your eggs are in regards to menopause and getting pregnant.  Also, it's best to have it done for two months because the fsh levels go up and down. You might be a 3 one month (meaning the eggs great that month) and a 45 the next month.  You always go with the highest reading.

  2. I believe it lets you know if you're not ovulating or not. Not necessarily an ovulation test, but it sees if the hormone that stimulates the actual egg and ovulation is working. It should say it's use somewhere in the pamphlet in the box it came with.

  3. FSH - follicle-stimulating hormone

If you have high levels of FSH, it means that your body is trying very hard to produce eggs and ovulate.  When your body is trying very hard to do this, it generally indicates you have diminished ovarian reserve.  (not a good thing)

The FSH test must be preformed on day 3 of your cycle to be valid.  You want the test to be negative--that is good.  If the test comes back positive, then you should make an appointment with your OBGYN or go directly to an RE.  They will need to run a blood test on day 3 of your cycle to determine the exact level of your FSH.  If you do have high levels of FSH, it is best to start seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) that has experience in high levels of FSH.  This will be your best chance at having a baby.

  4. its to test the hormones to see if your menopausal or not.
