FIA President Jean Todt says there will be 20 races in the 2012 Formula 1 season
President of International Automobile Federation (FIA) Jean Todt has said that even though they announced that there are going to be 21 races in the 2012 Formula 1 season, one race is likely to be dropped from the calendar which means there will be only
20 races next year.
The inaugural Indian Grand Prix is expected to take place in the 2011 Formula 1 season and in 2012, it is expected that the US Grand Prix will inaugurate the new Austin, Texas circuit in the country.
However, since it is believed that the rest of the calendar will remain exactly the same in 2012, this meant that there will be 21 races in total but now, Todt claims that one race will be removed from the calendar. According to the official report released
by the FIA, the only venue that has been marked as “subject to confirmation” is the Turkish Grand Prix.
The rest of the venues are confirmed for the 2012 Formula 1 season as a result of which, it is believed that the Turkish Grand Prix might not be a part of the 2012 Formula 1 season. However, Jean refused to confirm that the race which is going to be removed
is going to be the Turkish Grand Prix.
“Absolutely not. There are 21 dates, but the championship will be 20 grands prix. I don't know which one will go, but the championship will be 20 races,” Todt told the media.
Other than that, a lot of criticism has evolved regarding the dates as well as many believe that holding the US Grand Prix in July is not a good idea since the weather in Texas is extremely hot during that time.
On top of that, if the Turkish Grand Prix is dropped from the 2012 Formula 1 calendar, then there is going to be a 4-week gap between the Korean Grand Prix and the Spanish Grand Prix which is expected to be the first European race of the 2012 Formula 1 season.
