FIA announces single Drag Reduction System zone for 2011 Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 ruling body, the International Automobile Federation, (FIA) has confirmed that there will be only one Drag Reduction System zone at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The FIA announced this on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.
The last Grand Prix at the Monza circuit saw a lot of overtaking because of its two DRS zones with separate activation points. The Monza track has many tricky turns and is low on downforce which makes the effect of DRS relatively less compared to other tracks.
The FIA had particularly introduced this device into Formula 1 2011 season to ensure there is less aerodynamic drag and that overtaking during the race becomes easy. What this device does is that it helps in reducing downforce and makes overtaking easier
by increasing the straight-line speed of the cars.
Earlier in the 2011 season, the FIA even allowed two DRS zones on circuits like Valencia and Montreal because of the number of straights they had.
For the Singapore GP, the FIA wants to switch back to a single DRS zone which will be situated between turns 5 and 7. The total distance of the DRS is 230 meters and the activation point is located after 35 meters of turn 5.
This decision from FIA has come about keeping in focus the characteristics and layout of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The circuit is high on downforce and is known to be a bumpy track. It has been experienced from the past that overtaking on this track
has not been very easy.
Let’s see how this single DRS zone effects the overtaking ability and overall performance of the drivers at this weekend’s Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The action from the only night race of the 2011 Formula 1 season will begin Friday, September 23, 2011 with the two practice sessions. The qualifiers and race will take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
