FIA bans Drag Reduction System for Eau Rouge at the Spa-Francorchamps – Formula 1 news
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has decided to ban the Drag Reduction System for the Eau Rouge at the Spa-Francorchamps where the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix is expected to take place this coming weekend.
The longest straight of the track is right after the Eau Rouge and since the section itself is just a slight uphill curve, it was believed that the detection point of DRS would be right after the first hairpin on the track until turn 3 that is the long chicane.
In order to ensure the safety of the drivers, the officials recently released a report which claims that the drivers will be tempted to go even faster on the Eau Rouge as a result of which the use of the DRS can prove to be dangerous there.
Other than that, it has also been revealed that the drivers are sometimes not aware of the rear wing change as a result of which they are not able to cope up with the grip changes. If something like that happens at the Eau Rouge, then the drivers will not
be able to do much to avoid an accident.
Nevertheless, the drivers will be allowed to use the device during the qualifying and free practice sessions at any point of the track in order to increase or decrease the downforce according to their likings.
Besides the DRS ban, the FIA banned the device for the straight tunnel at Monte Carlo as well which held the Monaco Grand Prix this year.
The DRS is a device which enables a driver to change the angle of his rear wing in order to increase or decrease downforce according to his likings while driving. This device has been introduced officially this year in order to increase the overtaking rate
of each race and up until now, it has been a success at some venues but has failed at others as well.
Either way, the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix is expected to be one of the most anticipated races of the year since it is like a ‘do or die’ race for Ferrari and McLaren.
