FIA confirms Blown Diffuser will be banned from British Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has revealed after a meeting of Formula 1’s Technical Working Group that the Blown Diffuser will be banned for the 2011 season starting from the British Grand Prix.
This is going to be a huge blow to Red Bull Racing as it is believed that the reigning world champions are currently dominating the 2011 Formula 1 season mainly because of their qualifying pace which is noticeably better than the rest of the teams. It is
believed that they use the Blown Diffuser for the betterment of aerodynamics which is forbidden according to the rules.
However, the FIA did not directly target Red Bull regarding this ban and said that some of the teams have been using this device illegally.
“There are two issues. One is the impact of it, which I doubt will probably affect us any more or any less than any other team. But the other one is the mechanism and the understanding behind the technical directive. That is what will undoubtedly be debated
in the TWG next week, which is probably the right forum to discuss it,” said Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner.
Reports revealed that the FIA informed the teams this past weekend during the Canadian Grand Prix that the decision regarding the Blown Diffuser ban might be delayed but it seems that the ban is now going to be enforced from its original date.
The altering of aerodynamics during the race is only allowed through the Drag Reduction System device which is in the hands of the driver. Since the FIA designates the DRS zones for each circuit as it comes, the driver is only allowed to adjust his rear
wing or change the aerodynamics of his respective car during the race in those zones.
Nevertheless, McLaren now believe that they can decrease the pace difference between them and Red Bull Racing in terms of qualifying and it is going to be interesting to see how much this ban affects each team’s respective pace.
