FIA confirms RPM limit of 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines to 15,000 rpm – Formula 1 news
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has recently confirmed that the rpm (revolutions per minute) limit of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines is going to be 15,000.
The FIA also claimed that the new engines which will be introduced in the 2014 Formula 1 season are going to have the unique ‘Formula 1 sound’ as people like Luca di Montezemolo and Bernie Ecclestone were concerned about. It also clarified that the new engines are going to be turbo charged.
Other than that, the issue regarding the rpm limit was also raised after the confirmation of these new 2014 regulations and according to the aerodynamics specialist of Red Bull Racing Team Adrian Newey, the rpm limit was expected to be somewhere between 14,000 and 15,000.
In order to clear this confusion, the FIA decided to release an official statement which cleared this matter and revealed the specifications of the new 1.6-litre V6 engines.
“This parameter has been updated from 12000rpm to 15000 rpm to allow engineers more flexibility in power and energy management. However, as a consequence of the new architecture (V6) and the change in rev-limit, the engine will sound different, but will remain representative of Formula One,” said the official report released by the FIA.
The new 2014 engines according to the FIA’s report regarding the engine specifications will have a V6 1,600cc engine with the rpm limit of 15,000.
Other than that, the officials revealed that the direct fuel injection is going to have a limit of up to 500bar and the engine is going to have a single turbocharger along with a controlled fuel flow.
The energy recovery and storage systems for the 2014 Formula 1 cars are going to be the Kinetic Energy Recovery System with a power of 120kW on the rear wheels while the exhaust energy recovery system is going to be linked to the turbocharger.
“The fuel flow limit will stay the same. The technologies are the same and as a consequence any increase in rpm will constrain the engineers to work harder on reducing friction and gaining on engine efficiency,” the report further stated.
It is believed that the FIA introduced these new engine regulations mainly because of the fact that they want to attract more engine manufacturers to the sport. The FIA has given the manufacturers some sort of flexibility so that they can experiment with the engines and probably come up with some even better ideas for the 2014 Formula 1 engines regulations.
The FIA claims that these developments will also have some real-world benefits as a result of which, more efficient road cars can also be designed in the future.
