FIA confirms V6 turbo engines for the Formula 1 2014 season in WMSC meeting – Formula 1 news
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has confirmed that the engine change in Formula 1 will take place from the 2014 season with 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines replacing the current V8s.
An official meeting of the World Motor Sport Council agreed on postponing the engine change to the 2014 Formula 1 season.
The statement issued from the FIA read as, “Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One.”
Initially, the WMSC decided to switch to V4 technology from the 2013 Formula 1 season in order to cut down the cost of Formula 1 sport. Moreover, the FIA wanted to make Formula 1, the pinnacle of Motorsports, environment friendly.
However, as the Formula 1 teams voiced concerns over the V4 technology and proposed V6 instead, the FIA decided to think over their previous decision.
The FIA also detailed the regulations about the Kinetic Energy Recovery System.
“The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season,” read the statement of FIA.
The new KERS unit will be more powerful than the current one. The 2014 KERS will work on 120kw power. However, the engine power is being reduced to 12,000 rpm.
The Formula 1 teams are in conversation to boost the engine power to at least 15,000 rpm so that the racing cars do not become road product.
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone was the one to voice against the V4 engines and stated that the sport will lose its spectators if the engine is downgraded.
Now as the V6 have been approved from the 2014 season, it will be interesting to see which car manufacturers bring the best out of their factory to take the market in the very first season of V6s.
