FIA declares Mercedes’ F-duct device as legal – Formula 1 news
International Automobile Federation (FIA) has declared that DRS-activated F-duct device of Mercedes AMG is legal.
The sport governing body of FIA seemed to wade back into the discussion of F-duct design of the Brackley-based team which has been facing immense criticism and expressed it to be legitimate.
Mercedes had a very successful pre-season testing programme this year as compared to the preceding one in which they could hardly manage to test run their car before the season opener.
Mercedes driver, Michael Schumacher showed quite impressive performances during the qualifying of the first two races held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia and Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. However, the seven-time world champion has not
been able to show his charisma in the races and has only secured one championship point in the season so far.
Moreover, it has been reported that the argument which is made against Mercedes is the difference of the team’s performance in DRS unrestricted and restricted drives.
For instance they did well during the qualifying of both the races in which the DRS was allowed while conversely, failed to keep up the performance level on the race track due to the restriction on it.
It will be important to mention here that Red Bull Racing and Lotus have been keep on raising concerns regarding the Mercedes’ design while asking FIA to give the necessary explanation on the issue.
Furthermore, Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull has stated that it is not only the concern of the defending champions and Lotus while he said that there are many other teams which are keeping an eye on this matter.
“Believe me it’s not just Red Bull, I think there’s half the paddock that’s been looking at this,” he told British television Sky Sport’s The F1 Show.
Contrary to this, the team principal of Mercedes, Ross Brawn is still with the view that DRS is in compliance with the rules and regulations of FIA
Brawn is quoted by the BBC, “We call it the DRS, because that’s all it is. The purpose of the DRS is to improve overtaking and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
