FIA gives teams grace period regarding the blown diffuser regulations changes – Formula 1 news
According to a recent announcement, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has given the Formula 1 teams a grace period before banning the methods teams are currently using for their blown diffusers.
The FIA revealed that the teams are using this device in order to enhance the aerodynamic properties of their respective cars which is not allowed according to the regulations.
In order to prevent the teams from illegally using this feature of the blown diffuser, the FIA recently decided to ban the blowing of exhaust gases beyond 10 percent of full throttle.
This ban was originally planned before the Spanish Grand Prix but since the teams do not have much time now to make any sort of adjustment or replacement, they have asked for a stay which has been granted to them.
“These sorts of staccato exhausts that you hear, I don't think you will be hearing anymore,” Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn told the media.
It is believed that Red Bull Racing Team has mastered the blowing of exhaust gasses through their respective car’s diffuser as a result of which the team has been able to take some advantage over its rivals.
Because of this, it is believed that the rest of the top running teams including McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes GP might have issued a complaint regarding this rule as a result of which the FIA decided to take some action.
“It is inevitable and the unfortunate consequence of success,” said Christian Horner when asked if the band was a result of a complaint.
Previously, McLaren’s Phil Prew stated that Red Bull’s qualifying pace is better than the rest of the teams mainly because of the fact that they use their engine to maximise the potential of the exhaust gases.
“The use of elaborate engine modes may be [a reason it is quicker in qualifying], with the generation of downforce being quite highly influenced with the exhaust flows,” Prew said.
Nevertheless, a date regarding the decision of this rule is going to be set soon by the FIA and the teams hopefully after the Spanish Grand Prix.
