FIA president Jean Todt hints Bahrain GP decision can be overturned if conditions worsen – Formula 1
International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Jean Todt has said that the Bahrain Grand Prix decision was taken with a unanimous vote of the World Motor Sport Council and can be changed if conditions around October escalate irrationally.
Todt, who himself participated in the meeting of WMSC, added that the Bahrain GP decision was done taking into consideration all the parties involved and the word from the surveying parties of the WMSC in Bahrain.
Todt stated, “If we have clear evidence that there is a risky situation this will obviously be taken into consideration.”
A Human Rights organisation working in Bahrain, Avaaz, rejected the idea of peace in the Kingdom. A statement from the organisation said the Human Rights parties involved in the meeting of WMSC in Barcelona were closely related to the Bahraini government
and they hid the true picture of events happening there.
He further rejected the idea of the Human Rights representatives that Bahrain is still chaotic and said, “Our special envoy had many meetings in Bahrain, even with the human rights people responsible, he found a stable situation, a quiet one, and we unanimously
agreed. The messages coming out are about peace, about restoring a good situation in this part of the world. My thinking is that, as a sporting body, we must support that.”
Todt also rejected the idea of Red Bull’s driver Mark Webber, who said that going to Bahrain will not be suitable under such circumstances. Todt said that Webber’s idea is based on personal feelings more than the interests of Formula 1 or Bahrain.
Ever since the decision to reinstate Bahrain was taken, many Formula 1 related people have voiced against it.
Nevertheless, the WMSC agreed on racing in Bahrain and now the biggest concern for the Formula 1 teams is security and budget. As far as security is concerned, the FIA will help them in Bahrain but 20 races in a calendar year is going to be a big issue in
terms of budget.
Let’s see how the events shape up in the days to come.
