FIA president Jean Todt says Renault proposed V4 engines for 2013 season – Formula 1 news
International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Jean Todt has said that engine suppliers Renault were the first one to propose V4 engines for the 2013 season.
Todt added that the V4 idea was not generated after one meeting but it took 11 long meetings to finalise the engine change rule for the 2013 season.
Renault has already stated that they will not wait beyond the 2013 season for the V4 engines or will quit their Formula 1 campaign.
Todt said, “It is they who proposed the regulations, and the FIA who accepted them. The proposal didn't fall from the sky; we had 11 meetings with all the representatives of those involved.”
Todt further added that unlike Renault, many other engine suppliers think differently. He explains, “When I talk to those responsible at Renault they tell me they will go out of F1 if this new engine does not come in 2013. When I talk to Mercedes and Ferrari
they ask me to postpone the introduction for a couple of years.”
He further added that not a single Formula 1 engine supplier is against the V4 but some of the bigger engine supplier teams have demanded more time to carry on their development work on the V4’s.
Renault is already preparing to be the best for the 2013 season as they have started preparing for the changes.
Renault has also consulted the FIA to give them permission to supply four teams instead of three for the 2012 Formula 1 season. If approved, Renault will supply the engines to the Williams team as well who, after a terrible start to the 2011 season, have
decided to change from Cosworth to Renault.
The V4 idea for the 2013 season was heavily proposed by many Formula 1 teams and they demanded that they should be given more time to cope up with the new technology.
Nevertheless, the decision on the V4 was confirmed in the World Motor Sport Council meeting and will be used for the 2013 Formula 1 season.
