FIA president Jean Todt wants race stewards to be consistent – Formula 1 news
FIA president Jean Todt has said that the race stewards must take consistent decisions and must be aware of the consequences of the penalties.
Todt said that instead of just imposing penalty, the race stewards should also consider its effects. Moreover, he said that consistency is very crucial in the decision making and he expects more reliable judgments from the stewards.
“Rather than always applying penalties you must analyse the consequences of the penalties,” he said during an FIA meeting chaired by Charlie Whiting.
“Consistency, for me, is crucial,” he added.
Furthermore, he said that the stewards must try to pass the related noted indicating the reasons of the penalty in order to give others a better understanding about it, in accordance with the rules and regulations.
In addition, he said that the stewards should also take advice from other partners including the teams and the drivers to make a sound decision.
“You have a very difficult job but you are now better supported by all the electronic facilities which help in analysing incidents,” he said. “The only thing you should now concentrate on, other than the good job you are doing, is how to do it better. It
would be good to speak to your partners, the teams and the drivers, who can give you good input.”
There has been a lot of criticism over some of the decisions been taken by the race stewards in this season for which the teams went to FIA for further clarifications.
Nevertheless, the Federation is planning to make some essential reforms in their system to make the decision making criteria more dependable and ensure its linkage with the regulations.
If FIA will be successful in making their judgment criteria better, it will definitely boost up the morale of everyone who is associated with the sport and will minimise the chances of disputes.
It is to be noted that there are not going to be any radical changes in the rules for the next season as compared to this year. Besides, it will be interesting to see how stewards take decisions in the coming year.
