FIA reveal more details about limitations of a movable rear wing for the 2011 Formula 1 season
It was revealed through FIA’s official rules and regulations report that the teams will be allowed to use the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and movable rear wings in the 2011 Formula 1 season but the rules for using movable rear wings were to be defined
later on by the FIA.
However, the FIA revealed that the mandatory movable rear wings will only be allowed at specific portions of each track respectively. Movable rear wings have been re-introduced in the sport mainly because of the fact that the FIA wanted to increase the rate
of overtaking at each race in 2011.
Recently, the FIA announced that a car will only be allowed to activate the wing if they are within a specific time limit difference of its rival car. This means that if a car is close enough to make an overtaking manoeuvre on its rival, the team would be
allowed to adjust or activate the movable rear wings in order to gain some sort of advantage over its rival.
“Further information, going into detail and the various scenarios still has to be clarified. Then it will be a case of seeing how things go in the race to understand how to proceed,” said Ferrari’s technical director Aldo Costa.
He added that the wings will not be allowed at wet races and it is believed that the FIA is going to monitor its use in the first couple of races and evaluate some data before deciding the rules and regulations about the device.
However, many drivers believe that their work is increasing unreasonably and the 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be very difficult for them as a result.
“It's just not enjoyable … pressing buttons, changing gear, pressing and holding,” said Rubens Barrichello.
Other than that, drivers like Fernando Alonso believe that the drivers will get used to it after driving it for a couple of days and one has to admit, it is about time that the drivers step up a bit and introduce some new driving techniques which are obviously
going to benefit the upcoming drivers.
Since a new device has been introduced, if the drivers want to win and take Formula 1 to the next level, they would have to get used to these devices and make it a part of their usual mechanical driving in order to prove that Formula 1 is the most technical
and difficult motorsport in the world.
On top of that, racing is going to become even more entertaining which is the main goal of the FIA at the moment.
