FIA reveals DRS activation zone for upcoming Turkish Grand Prix
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) has recently revealed the DRS (Drag Reduction System) zone for the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix. The activation zone for DRS is going to be the back straight of Istanbul Park, which is expected to be very
beneficial for the teams in terms of top speed.
DRS was reintroduced this year by the FIA in order to increase the overtaking rate in the sport and it seems that since the first 3 races of the 2011 Formula 1 season, the overtaking has indeed increased but many claim that it is mainly because of the new
Pirelli tyres.
Most of the professionals have criticized both DRS and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) as they believe that these devices are making racing more “machine reliant”, as a result of which the sport is not about driving as much as it used to be some time
ago.
DRS is a system, which enables a driver to change the angle of his respective car’s rear wing, during the race. As a result of which the drivers can now gain even more top speed at the most technical circuits of the sport.
However, the FIA announced before the beginning of the season that they are going to announce a portion of each track where the teams will be allowed to use DRS. Other than that portion, the drivers won’t be able to use DRS, which was quite “childish” according
to most of the critics.
The zone at the Turkish Grand Prix is located ahead of the track’s best overtaking area near turn 12. That is the turn where both of the Red Bull Racing Team drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber collided last year during their fight for the lead.
The DRS activation zone starts from turn 11 to the braking zone for turn 12. Other than that, the detection point for DRS is located just ahead of the braking zone for turn 9.
The detection zone is the area where a driver can enable DRS if he is a second within his rival’s car.
