FIA reveals DRS zone for upcoming Chinese Grand Prix
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) has recently announced the DRS (Drag Reduction System) zone for the Shanghai circuit where the Chinese Grand Prix is expected to take place this weekend.
As expected, the FIA revealed that the teams will be allowed to use DRS at the section of the back straight between turns 13 and 14 of the track.
After a DRS successful Malaysian Grand Prix, it is expected that the drivers will attempt overtaking even more at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix. Force India’s Paul di Resta stated that it is one of the most conducive tracks for DRS.
“It will be interesting to see how the DRS activation works with the rear wing in Shanghai because if it's going to work anywhere that's where it will be because it has a very long straight”, Di Resta said.
Other than that, it seems that Lotus Renault GP’s technical director’s wish came true as he warned that the FIA should not allow the drivers to use the system for the full length of the straight and added that the overtaking zone of the Sepang circuit was
well selected.
“It was good to see lots of overtaking and I think the FIA got the DRS settings just about right in Sepang", Allison said. "For China, they will need to choose the DRS activation point carefully because the DRS straight is around three hundred metres longer
compared to Sepang”, said James.
It is believed that the DRS would be pushed to its limits at the Chinese Grand Prix, as the long straight of the Shanghai International circuit is the second longest straight of Formula 1.
However, in order to prevent overtaking becoming too easy for the drivers, the drivers won’t be allowed to activate the system until a point they get 0.56 miles short of turn 14.
The full length of the straight is 0.73 miles actually and it has been revealed that the detection point to measure the gap between drivers is located in turn 12 from where the final sector of the track begins.
