FIA says the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead as planned – Formula 1 news
The FIA has said that the Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead as scheduled. The statement comes amid rising conflicting views on whether the race will take place or not.
Bahrain has been suffering from growing civil unrest as the governing body tries to control the rebellious rioting. The Human Rights Center in Bahrain has been aggressively advocating to boycott the race altogether. The Center has asked teams and drivers
not to take part in the race.
Bahrain has attracted a lot of attention from the media, player both current and former and even some politicians. Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has always supported the race to go ahead, and maintains his willingness for it. The Bahrain organisers have
also shown full support and have said that there are no security concerns in the country that can affect F1.
On Friday morning, the FIA released their statement mentioning that the body feels that appropriate measures are in place for the race to go ahead as scheduled.
“The FIA is the governing body of motor sport and therefore of Formula One. As such, it sets the season's calendars following the proposal of the Commercial Rights Holder (CRH) in accordance with the local national authorities in all matters relating to
safety. The FIA must make rational decisions based on the information provided to us by the Bahraini authorities and by the Commercial Rights Holder. In addition we have endeavoured to assess the ongoing situation in Bahrain,” the statement read.
FIA further clarified that the 2012 calendar was ratified by the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in 2011 and since then, there has been no official request from the F1 Commission or the CRH to postpone or cancel the race.
Based on the information, the FIA has at this point is completely satisfied that all proper security measures are in place to have the Grand Prix in Bahrain.
Even after this verdict from the FIA, there may still be some doubts over the event as the situation in the country will play a major role in the decision making for the race. It is scheduled for April 22, 2012.
