FIA sticks to its original decision of deciding the fate of Bahrain Grand Prix by May 1
Rumors had it that the FIA might give the government of Bahrain some more time to come up with a decision regarding the rescheduling of the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, the FIA confirmed recently, that it stands by its initial decision and will decide the
fate of the Bahrain Grand Prix until the 1st of May, 2011.
The chances though, of holding the event look bleak since a three-month state of emergency has been declared on the island state and the protests are becoming more violent as each day passes by.
Originally, the Bahrain Grand Prix was expected to be the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season on the 13th of March but since the government of Bahrain advised Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA that holding the event would not be safe
at the moment, the FIA had to cancel the event initially but later on, it was revealed that the event might get rescheduled.
As a result, the FIA’s World Motorsports Council is going to review the situation of the country till the 1st of May by latest and give Bahrain the option of holding a race at the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season, if the situation improves in
the country.
“There were many people involved in making that decision and for now the Council will respect the deadline. There is an obligation to that. But clearly the situation is fluid. We're adapting to information day by day, because of what is now happening we
will react when it is the right moment,” according to a spokesman of the FIA.
However, since the situation is getting worse with each day and since the Saudi Arabian troops have also been deployed on the ground in Bahrain this week, it seems that holding a Bahrain Grand Prix this year might not be possible.
