FIFA 12: Features and extras revealed at E3 2011 – Part 1
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) now in full swing in Los Angeles, game developers and publishers alike are sharing more details about their games on the show room floor.
From Insomniac Games and their impressive Resistance 3 to Ubisoft and their sterling Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, there was plenty going on at E3. However, Electronic Arts stole the show with their line up of sports titles, and FIFA 12 grabbed most of the headlines.
While there was plenty to keep the general gaming public busy at the EA booth, it was the ‘behind closed doors’ presentation on FIFA 12 that was by far the most intriguing. Players who made it to the booth were treated to a beta version of FIFA 12’s gameplay with Manchester United and Barcelona the two teams which were available for selection.
It was later revealed that the Project lead of FIFA was a Barcelona fan and the demo was in honour of the Champions League final and Barcelona’s mauling of their English opposition.
However, while that in itself was more than enough to keep FIFA fans excited for the game’s impending release, the handful of journalists invited to EA’s BCD briefing was the most impressive bit.
According to the game’s developer, the latest addition to the FIFA series is set to be the most realistic ever, as EA claim to have “bridged the gap between the video game and the real sport considerably.”
Jans McKormak, the Chief of Design behind the latest iteration of the FIFA series took to the stage and revealed a list of features that would help the game be as immersive as intense as any football season.
Starting off with player enhancements and improvements, Jans explained that while each player did have different statistics that made them in the game, there never was a true leadership attribute.
Jans revealed, “In the real game, certain players have an inspirational effect on the team and the entire squad seem to raise their game when playing alongside such players. This is something we wanted make a core element in FIFA 12.”
Players like Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Chelsea’s John Terry were revealed to be two such players who would rank high in the ‘leadership’ attribute. When asked how exactly it would affect the game, Jans explained, “basically when, say (Steven) Gerrard or (John) Terry are playing the entire team’s statistics increase by three points.”
An impressive new feature the demo also showed was that certain players could bring the team’s statistics down as well, with Titus Bramble apparently bringing his side’s overall attributes down by five points.
Also, players would perform like their real life counterparts in terms of which areas of the pitch they are on and where the ball is. Apparently Fernando Torres’s ‘Shoot accuracy’, ‘Composure’ and ‘Shot power’ attributes would drop by 15 points everytime he got near the opposition penalty area. This would make it just as hard for him to find the back of the net in FIFA 12 as it has been for him to do so in real life.
There were many more interesting features including how a team’s moral would go down when John Terry or Ryan Giggs were substituted during a match, details on which are in the next part of the article: http://www.senore.com/FIFA-12-Features-and-extras-revealed-at-E3-2011-Part-2-a74823
