FIFA 12: Features and extras revealed at E3 2011 – Part 2
With Jans McKormak, the Chief of Design for FIFA 12 sharing details with a select group of journalists during a presentation behind closed doors, the game was looking up to be one of the most immersive football simulation experiences to date.
The ‘Leadership’ attribute was intriguing as was the player’s statistics varying with where he was on the field, but the best was yet to come when Jans revealed more about the individual abilities of each player.
In what EA dubbed as the ‘Scandal’ feature, players with notorious lifestyles would affect their teammates and their club’s performances.
Jans explained, “Basically if you were to sub (John) Terry during a match his teammates would become increasingly distracted and would glance looks at the stands to make sure their wives and girlfriends were safe. It really adds a new layer to how people
will use substitutions during matches.”
In addition, Jans also stated that Ryan Giggs would fall in the same category while Rooney would also be notorious as the club would have to pay fines for his ‘extracurricular’ after dark activities.
The feature is expected is to add drama and zest to the season mode, with the in-game newspaper constantly reporting on the latest scandals taking place in the FIFA 12 Career mode season.
Jans, also filled journalists on how the game was pushing for an ‘E’ rating instead of the ‘5’ so that it could be made available to even younger football fans.
“Apparently the issue was that the game contained graphic and somewhat scary images,” Jans conceded, “So to rectify that we have covered up Dirk Kuyt’s and Carlos Tevez’s faces so they won’t be giving children, or in fact any adults, nightmares.”
The application has been put forward to the PEGI ratings board with an answer expected in the next week or so.
Along with that it was announced that Barcelona, the Champions League and La Liga champions would get their own exclusive gameplay mechanic. The ‘R1’ or the ‘RB’ buttons would be used to trigger a dive when a gamer plays as Barcelona and play acting mechanics,
similar to those used for celebrations, would also be implemented.
This means that gamers can now pull of the famous ‘Busquests’ peek (L1 + O) or be carried off the field in a stretcher and come running back on when the opposition player is sent off.
Moving on from gameplay mechanics to aspects of the game that would improve the presentation and the feel of the ‘Career Mode’, Jans revealed that the Board of Directors of each club, who set the objectives and transfer policies, would be similar to their
real life counter parts.
In essence what this means is clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal would have stringent transfer policies on who they can buy.
Liverpool, for example, would only be allowed to buy unproven youngsters for ridiculously absurd amounts of money whereas Arsenal would only be allowed to sign young players with exotic names who would go on to leave the club once they establish themselves
as superstars.
Also there is season difficulty mode dubbed ‘Chelsea’ where the manager is sacked if he fails to win a trophy in a given season regardless of his past exploits, with his replacement’s only requirement said to be ‘grey hair’.
The now trademark Arsene Wenger ‘sulk’ will be featured in the game with the Arsenal manager moaning and complaining every time the opposition score.
Overall the FIFA 12 is set to be one of the most dramatic, scandalous and realistic games in the franchise and is sure to be another fine addition to the best selling series.
