Electronic Arts (EA) have announced that their forums were hacked into last week but are “confident” that user details and passwords “remain secure”.
Ever since Sony’s PlayStation Network was hacked into in March 2011, there has been a trend of hackers breaching security measures of company websites and playing havoc. At the same time a number of websites and forums of publishers have increased their
security measures in what seems to be an going cyber war.
However, it seems that despite all the security measures that EA has put in place a hacker, or group of hackers, managed to breach the security measures of the company’s online forums. This particular attack was not as devastating as the attack on the PlayStation
Network as all the hackers managed to was deface the forums.
Dan Sheridan, from EA’s UK marketing department, “As some of you noticed the homepage of the forums was defaced by a hacker yesterday using a very new exploit for the software which runs the forums.”
He continued, “This was noticed quickly and we took the action to take the forums offline while we investigated the details. This work is now complete and the vulnerability we believe was used has now been fixed.”
As for whether or not users need to be worried about their personal details and passwords being stolen, Mr. Sheridan commented on that as well, “There is no evidence that any personal data was compromised and as passwords aren’t stored in a recoverable manner,
we are confident they remain secure.”
The statement went on to thank the users for their patience during the time the forums had been offline and asked users to contact them if they needed any information or feedback whatsoever.
EA is one of the largest publishers in the gaming industry with more IPs than any other publishing studio. The FIFA, Dead Space, Battlefield, Need for Speed and Crysis series all fall under the EA umbrella.
This was more of a minor attack as compared to the more vicious assaults that have taken place over the past few months yet it seems that EA seem to be on top of the situation.
