David Rutter, the chief of the FIFA series, explains that the development team is the biggest critic of the FIFA series and that rarely have time between games to celebrate their success.
The hype building for the follow up to the bestselling football simulation title has begun and is in full swing as David Rutter and a number of EA representatives have begun releasing a plethora of information about the upcoming game.
FIFA 12 broke all the records set by previous games in the series and was praised by both critics and gamers alike. The game saw a whole new physics engine introduce and defending was also tweaked. Both the moves introduced fundamental changes in the gameplay but the risk paid off big time.
It turns out that the development team has a habit of criticising their own work to such an extent that the publishers would actually tell them to take it easy on themselves.
Rutter said, “We are hugely critical of ourselves to the extent where we get in trouble for it when we're doing presentations,". He explained how he knew both Peter Moore and Andrew Wilson, and that during their presentations both men would tell the developers not to, “be so hard on yourselves, you've got to tell some good news too.”
Rutter went on to explain that he took his latest opportunity when speaking to them, to share the good news. He said, "So today I did the good news; 'fantastic reviews, amazing sales, everyone loves our game' and then Aaron steps up and goes, 'this is rubbish, this is rubbish...”
He continued, “It's just the way we are. We don't have a great deal of time in the year to make the game and we don't have a great deal of time in the year either to celebrate what we just did."
It will be interesting to see how the new changes in FIFA 13 turnout and whether or not they will be significant enough for fans to stray from the ‘it’s the same game’ tag that has plagued the series over the years, or whether this is the year that Konami finally recovers some ground with the PES series.
