EA Sports will make use of Dimensional Imaging software, which will allow the developer to give more players the “DI3D star treatment”.
FIFA 12 raised the bar with respect to everything one had seen in a football simulation title; the visuals were better, presentation was improved, online modes expanded, a new physics engine added, players were given unparalleled freedom in defending and
many other new and improved components were added to the game.
However, it seems that EA has turned its attention to the next iteration in the long running series and it turns out that one of the improvements gamers will see that the number of players with realistic models in the game is going to increase.
The director of EA Capture, Mike Harrison, took a moment to explain the reason behind the move. He said, “We recognised a few years ago that raising the quality of facial appearance was an increasing priority for our game teams.”
Harrison also took the opportunity to point out the benefits of switching to the new technology, “Working closely with Dimensional Imaging has allowed us to develop a highly accurate 3D facial capture pipeline that is now so efficient that we can apply it
to more characters than we ever thought possible.”
However, whether or not that means that reserve team players will be getting the full 3D mapping treatment is something that remains to be seen, although one can expect the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jay Spearing, Charlie Adam and Tom Cleverly to get their real-life
likenesses in FIFA 13 if nothing else.
The CEO of Dimensional Imaging, Colin Urquhart, explained how the company’s relationship with EA has grown and actually helped the 3D Capture technology company grow and develop.
"EA was one of the first developers to recognize the need for improved capture workflows, and working with them since EA Sports FIFA 10 has been instrumental in helping Dimensional Imaging to develop a product suite that is now suitable for even the most
demanding development pipelines in the business."
FIFA 12 took a huge risk by changing the core fundamentals of the series, but in the end the move paid off big time, literally with the game going on to become the best-selling title in the franchise’s history, and it will be interesting to see how EA Sports
try and top that.
