FIFA 2010 World Cup: Ferguson Wishes Forlan Good Luck

There has been one man in the Uruguayan team that has been able to produce a constant performance for the Celeste and that would be Diego Forlan. The 31 year old has been a good luck omen for Uruguay since ages.

He has scored 28 goals in 68 appearances while playing for the big guns during his career, including the likes of Inter Milan, Manchester United, Villareal and Atletico Madrid. He has also received the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe twice.

In the current FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa he has produced 4 goals in 6 matches making him a contestant for the Golden Boot award in the World Cup. But this can only happen if the Folan goes berserk in the upcoming third place match against Germany.

Though Forlan, the 3 time elected man of the match in South Africa was extremely disappointed after their 3-2 loss against Netherlands which would have secured a place for them in the finals. He has expressed that he hopes Uruguay will be reformed and rejuvenated as they battle against the Germans for 3rd place.

He expressed how he believes that the Uruguayan team gave it their best shot and fought for the glory of the World Cup for as long as they could and after the defeat he was more disappointed than his fans. But he wants to let everyone know that he and his team will give in their best shot against Germany as well.

The Atletico Madrid’s ace forward who helped them win the Europa Cup final against Fulham, commented that he and his team entered the field to win the match and knew all along that they were in no way shabbier a team than the Dutch, but some mistakes and advantages got them lucky in the end.

He also revealed that his former club’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson sent a good luck text message to him, prior to the match against Netherland. It was previously known that Forlan and Ferguson had a falling out which is regarded Forlan’s fault, as he is considered to have attitude problems. This falling out eventually resulted in the departure of Forlan from Manchester United but it seems that these wounds have healed. This could eventually mean that Manchester United could sign in players from Uruguay and Luis Suarez’s wish to join the Red Devils might come true.

The Atletico Madrid’s 11th hour Samaritan season with Manchester United was a disaster for his career. Between the years of 2002 and 2004 Forlan was considered a failure but since he started his career at the Spanish League, La Liga there has been a massive turn around.

While talking to the media Forlan stated that during his time at Manchester United he was constantly over shadowed by the team’s featuring players and though he really never had a real chance to prove himself, he considered his period there fair, in respect to the conditions he was in at the club.

Forlan stated that, “I was trying to look for a place, but it was difficult so I moved to another team. Sir Alex Ferguson sent me a text message on Monday, wishing me luck. I always had respect for him and he felt the same for me”.

Forlan helped Atletico Madrid score their first European Cup goal since 1962. He scored the two goals in the final match against Fulham to obtain the title. On the subject Forlan stated, “It has been the best year of my career. Winning the Europa League with Atletico Madrid and then reaching the semi-final of the World Cup is great”.

Though Forlan is suffering from a thigh injury he said that he would be ready for the 3rd position match against Germany. He said, “I hope to be fit for Saturday. I want to play for that third place. I was a bit tired against Holland and I was limping as I was trying to stay in the game. We were so close to a World Cup final. We are disappointed because we missed a great chance”.
