FIFA 2010 World Cup: Soccer/football growing in United States of America

As the World Cup was drawing near, the Americans did get a bit excited than most media analysts expected, story after story was printed on soccer and there was this question in everyone’s mind that will soccer take a hold the States.

However, now as the World Cup is over, everything is returning back to normal, the little interest that was produced for one of the biggest tournaments in the world, is slowly moving its way to the back shelf, from where it came from before the start of the World Cup.

Some experts say that this year’s outcome would be a little different and maybe soccer would stick. An internet site that measures Peak internet usage says that on June22 2006 was the fifth most active moment in history and this was when the U.S- Ghana match was going on.

In New York Times, there was an article that showed that ratings for the World Cup 2010 were the highest in history, as it was reported that around fifteen million people saw the match between Argentina- Mexico. Almost twenty million people watched the American team lose to Ghana, while only around eight million people tuned in to watch the England- Germany match.

Reports show that Viewership has actually increased 58percent, which is actually astonishing. ESPN paid well over a hundred million dollars just to get the broadcasting rights to the 2010, 2014 World Cups, and the Women’s World Cup as well.

Football is definitely on the rise anyone can tell you that but does that mean people in the states will actually show more interest in soccer than in American Football. In a country where ‘football’ is, known as ‘soccer’ and the only ‘football’ Americans do acknowledge is ‘American football.

Another major point to this is that there is not going to be any descent or more to say spectacular match that would attract the number of people to make a general interest of the nation to watch it.  The country loves Landon Donovan and he was on the cover of countless major magazines but the only thing that is coming up is the friendly with Brazil in 2011.

Though it is predicted that Major League Soccer will get a boost but the fact remains that matches between for example Kansas City and Colorado will never attract enough attention even just to be considered in the same league, as a match against England- U.S.

As the foreign leagues start in August, its one thing to see a fan supporting the States in a football match but to learn the details and ups and downs the things about the English Premier League is something else.

It was said that when the Americans played against Ghana, the red white and blue did not make the plays, Bradley knows that the loss against Ghana certifies that the teams needs improvement.

Bradley commented that it was part of their responsibility to take things further in the World Cup and that would have showed progress but now even as they didn’t then, that just means that they have to keep on trying.

The American team will keep going and with that, the growth of Soccer in the United States. However, as Brazil is more in a Central Time Zone, it would always have better ratings, people will keep on arguing on the topic and people will keep presenting their new theories.

Here are some statistics about Soccer and American football that will shock you and amaze you with the number of growing of soccer fans is America and worldwide. In the last World Cup of 2006 held in Germany, there were more than 600 million people who tuned in for the proceeding of the FIFA World Cup final and in comparison to that 107 million people tuned in for the Super Bowl. Also for the USA versus Ghana match a total of at least 20 million viewers were recorded. ESPN has specially contracted a $100 million deal in which it has right over footballing events till 2014. With progresses like these, the American football passion is surely growing towards a positive future.
