FIFA 2010 World Cup: Torres happy with Roy but unhappy with World Cup performance
The latest news from Anfield is that Fernando Torres has said that he is happy with the appointment of Roy Hodgson as the new Liverpool coach. He has expressed interest in a future at Liverpool Football Club stating that he wants to know what plans the new coach has for the club.
The star ace for the Reds and striker for Spain has had rumours at large linking him to the Spanish giants Barcelona. Torres has said that things are finally clearing out at Anfield with the departure of Rafael Benitez to Inter Milan and the arrival of Hodgson from Fulham. The new occupant at Merseyside will be trying to take Liverpool out of its troubling times.
Torres, who is still in South Africa being involved with the proceedings of the World Cup where the Spanish team has reached the semi-finals, said that, “I was happy he (Hodgson) got the job. I haven't had a chat with him yet but I will talk with him soon and we will see his ideas about the future”.
He didn’t collaborate much on his future by saying, “For now, my future is here. South Africa and the World Cup is too important to think about things after that. I have a very important week still here and after that I will have time to talk with him and talk about my future”.
Torres, however, did say that he has full trust in Hodgson and that he will bring the club to its former glory and revive the team from a season that can be described as disappointing to say the least. Liverpool failed to qualify for next season’s Championship League and came 7th in the English Premier League.
Hodgson on the other hand had a great time with bringing around the Fulham team from the brinks of relegation. They were brought to the 12th position while in the Europa Cup they went onto the finals where in the last moments they were outdone by Atletico Madrid.
Torres in reference to Hodgson said, “He did really well at Fulham and I am sure he can do better for Liverpool. He is a very good manager. He showed that in the past and in the last season with Fulham. Hopefully he will be the right man to give Liverpool the opportunity to be strong again”.
Torres also said that he has picked up experience from Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in Liverpool and that will help him a lot during the semi final. He also said that he had learnt a lot from the German defeating England 4-1 and Argentina 4-0. He stated, “Germany have not surprised me. I am a big fan of German football. I know all of their players. I think the German people weren't expecting them to play as good as they have been playing”.
He said that he was sure the Germans would end up in the finals or the semi finals and they were going to encounter them one time or another. He also expressed that he believed that the Germans were a very good team. He also said that the he had talked to Gerrard and Carrehger and they had given him advice for the match.
He also admitted that his performance had not been at his best due to his ankle and groin injury. He said that though he had nearly recovered from the groin injury he was still healing from the ankle surgery.
Still he also said that he believed he still had performed well especially in assisting the starring striker David Villa in scoring the 5 important goals for Spain.
Torres claimed, “It is a difficult tournament for me because my fitness is not the best but I am improving every game. I am happy for the things I did in the game against Paraguay in the quarter-finals and in the last game as well. I am feeling better but I still have to improve, obviously”.
He had to admit that he had produced an under par performance. He added that he had not arrived in South Africa in full fitness but now that Spain were so ahead in the tournament he was not going to let that come in his way and bring out his A game against Germany. On his stay at Liverpool he stated, “I am happy with the things I am doing and hopefully the manager and the team as well”.
