FIFA 2010 World Cup: Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan expresses that his Golden Ball Award is for all his fans and team mates
Diego Forlan, the hit man from Uruguay and the person who won the Golden Ball award, has told the media that he was both delighted and proud to have achieved this award. The best player of the 2010 World Cup said that he would not be here if it was not for the players around him and he owed so much to them.
The Golden Ball award was presented to Forlan right after the Final as it has traditionally been done. The award is given to the player who shows the best individual performance in the tournament.
Forlan has netted a total of five goals in the tournament, and has been the backbone to the driving force that pushed the Celeste side so far to the point that they have come to the highest finish point in the World Cup in the last forty years. Forlan is thirty one years old and still pushing hard and there are only a few that would argue that he did not deserve this award.
Forlan confessed to the media that he would have never gone so far without the skills of his exceptionally talented team mates and he owed the Golden Ball award to them.
On receiving the Golden Ball award Forlan commented, “It is something incredible. I am overcome with emotion and happiness for this recognition that I never could have achieved without the help and support of the great team that has been formed in the Uruguay squad".
Cachayacha expressed his gratitude to all the support the Uruguayan side has, which has completely left the small nation of just three million people completely captivated.
Forlan went on to say that this award is for every single Uruguayan to enjoy and each and every one of them deserve it.
The champions of the World Cup returned home the day after the World Cup ended and there was a raucous reception waiting for them in the city of Madrid everyone was excited and over whelmed with joy in welcoming their team back home.
The Spanish team have joined the ranks in history as the proud winners of the foot ball World Cup. This is a very first for the Spanish. The team arrived at the Barajas airport a day after the end of the tournament then were taken to the hotel to enjoy a meal together and then all of them were taken to the Royal Palace where they were received King Juan Carlos. At the time Queen Sofia and the prince, and the princesses of the autonomous community from northern Spain were also present in the Zarzuela Palace.
As reported by the local media that the King welcomed the team by thanking them for making his dreams come true and for projecting Spain’s name throughout the world and went on to call the team a great example of nobility, football, team work and sportsmanship. The king thanked them for setting such an example to live on forever and shinning for Spain.
Princess Leonor and Sofia were actually wearing Spain shirts in the reception and touched the World when it was presented to them by Ikar Casillas and Alvaro Arbeloa let them wear his medal.
After this the team made its way to the Prime Minister of Spain Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero at the Moncloa Palace who was over whelmed and thanked the team by saying that this trophy is for all the previous generations that tried to win the World Cup and belongs to them too and it shows the fair play and team work of the team. He met the team by saying Congratulations to all the twenty three Spanish players, the FA, and the coaching staff.
The Captain of the La Furia Roja said on the reception that it is a great fortune for him to present all these great players and that they have brought this great trophy back from South Africa as they deserved it and he thanked all of Spain for its support and ended the speech by a saying “Long live Spain”!
