FIFA WORLD CUP 2010- Top 10 goals of the tournament so far
The group stages of the FIFA WORLD CUP 2010 have finally come to an end. With the last World Cup finalists already eliminated, the trophy will now change hands. The group stages provided fans with fast paced action, eye catching game play and above all, truly stunning and remarkable goals. These goals have already given the fans the excitement the World Cup promises, with many more perhaps still to come.
We will now have a look at the top ten strikes of the World Cup so far.
10) Tshabalala vs. Mexico: What a way to kick things off. The hosts South Africa opened the tournament in remarkable fashion, when Tshabalala scored a truly remarkable strike. The Mexican goal keeper, Perez, is not to be blamed as the shot was just unstoppable. Placing the ball sweetly into the top corner of the Mexican net, Tshabalala and company celebrated in a unique fashion, sporting a traditional dance on the sideline.
9) Gabriel Heinze vs. Nigeria: Argentina played their first match against Nigeria in Group B. They may perhaps have the best attacking five in the field, but their first goal was scored by a defender. Converting Veron’s beautiful cross, Heinze made space inside the box and deployed the ball into the top left corner with a powerful header.
8) Diego Forlan vs. South Africa: Forlan is in his prime form, his goal scoring ability which won his club the inaugural Europa Cup. He continued to carry that form into the FIFA World Cup, and scored an amazing goal after picking the ball in the midfield. He then unleashed a stunning swerving kick into the South African goal, although he may owe it to a deflection.
7) Keisuke Honda Vs Denmark: The first ever free kick goal of the tournament, Honda added his name to the scoring sheet in a truly outstanding fashion. He picks his spot perfectly, giving the Danish goal keeper no chance whatsoever.
6) Yasuhito Endo Vs Denmark: The Japanese scored another brilliant free kick, this time by Endo. He timed his shot to perfection, using just the right amount of curve, power and swerve to beat the Danish Keeper. With big guns like Ronaldo and Messi yet to convert a free kick, Endo may have taught them an important lesson on how to control the Jabulani ball.
5) Valter Birsa Vs USA: A perfect, impressive and amazing strike by Birsa left American goalkeeper Howard glued to his spot. Howard can’t be blamed as it was an outstanding strike; which perhaps no one in the world could have saved.
4) Luis Fabiano Vs Ivory Coast: Fabiano opened his account of goals in a truly emphatic fashion. Given a beautiful pass by Kaka, Fabiano waited inside the box and then unleashed a powerful strike above the goal keepers head into the roof of the goal. The keeper had covered most of the near post and was not expecting such a strike. Fabiano unleashed his powerful right foot, finding the roof of the net, giving the keeper absolutely no chance whatsoever.
3) David Villa vs. Honduras: A disappointing start to a tournament, Spain came back in an incredible fashion. David Villa’s first strike against Honduras was an incredible one. After receiving a pass on the left wing; he dodged two defenders, before an elegant shot found the right corner of the net. It was a masterpiece by the newly signed Barcelona forward, leaving Honduras stunned and speechless.
2) Fabio Quagliarella vs. Slovakia: Italy’s brightest moment of the campaign came when Quagliarella scored a wonderful strike from distance. He was not a first team player, and was only brought when Italy had their backs against the wall. His strike gave Italy a glimpse of hope. His strike was an unbelievable one, finding the top corner of the Slovakian net, taking Italy to 2-1.
1) Maicon Vs Korea DPR: Brazil’s opening goal in the World Cup was not scored by the likes of Fabiano or Kaka, but it was by, right back, Maicon. Korea held Brazil to a frustrating and annoying 0-0 first half with some strong defence. Maicon likes getting forward up the pitch and scored from an unusual angle. The keeper had moved a bit forward, with Maicon just at the near post. He unleashed the shot, swerving it into the far post, which was perhaps from an unusual angle, but was equally extraordinary. It was not a fluke as well as he meant to take a shot on goal, rather than cross to his team mates.
