FIFA World Cup 2010: Best Goals of the Tournament
The 2010 World Cup has seen some amazing strikes, which have delighted the fans in South Africa, many of whom have traveled thousands of miles to watch the world's biggest footballing event. Presented below is a compilation of some of the best goals witnessed in South Africa in this year's World Cup.
David Villa, Spain vs. Honduras:
David Villa has been in exceptional form in this tournament, netting five times overall, but his strike against Honduras was one of the best of the tournament. After receiving the ball on the left flank from Xabi Alonso, Villa drove into the Honduras defense, cutting inside past one man before taking the ball past another; and he wasn't done yet. There was another defender present to block his path to goal, but he cut inside and let rip a stunning curler into the top of the goal that no keeper on earth could have stopped.
Diego Forlan, Uruguay vs. Germany
Forlan is a long-range expert and has been credited with some of the most outrageous goals in both club and International football. It is no surprise then that he features in the A-list whenever there’s talk of the best players. His goal against Germany was a combination of good passing and stunning technique, as the South American laid the ball off for his countrymen and then waited patiently for a cross. When the ball arrived, Forlan only had one thing on his mind; he volleyed the ball into the ground and past a helpless German goalkeeper, who could do nothing but admire a shot by a man who’s probably the best striker at the World Cup.
Diego Forlan, Uruguay vs. Ghana
Forlan's other goal that makes this list was against Ghana. After being put behind by the Africans, the Uruguayans needed some inspiration from their Captain, and as always, he did not disappoint. When a free-kick was awarded on the edge of the box, who else but Forlan stepped up to take it. His powerful shot dipped and swerved past the Ghana keeper who was one of the most difficult men to beat in the tournament. The movement on the ball was such that the goalkeeper stood no chance whatsoever of saving the kick as it nestled in the back of the goal.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Netherlands vs. Uruguay
A defender by trade, Van Bronckhorst doesn't score too many goals in matches, either for the Netherlands or his club side, but after his goal against Uruguay, one wonders why not. The Dutchman appeared to be in a harmless position on the left flank as he received the ball about 35 yards out of goal. The Uruguay defenders let him take his time with the ball and that cost them, as the Dutch defender angled a powerful ball from a long way out of the goal which started off much higher than the goal, but dipped at the last moment right into the corner of the goal. There are few shots that are completely unstoppable, and this was one of them.
Maicon, Brazil vs. North Korea
There is still debate about whether Maicon meant his goal against the North Koreans, but since he is Brazilian, he probably did. This goal came from an impossible angle, as the goal was barely visible from where the Brazilian full back took his shot. Standing almost in line with the corner flag, everyone expected a cross but instead, Maicon went for goal, and the rest, as they say, is history. His shot started outside the goal and moved in and ended up hitting the side netting on the other side. A worthy goal to win a final but instead it arrived in the first game of the tournament for Brazil.
