FIFA World Cup 2010 – Best XI for FIFA World Cup 2010 so far.
A large number of players, who were expected to play well, did not actually live up to the expectations. On the other hand, some underdogs shined like a star for their national team. Lionel Messi, for Argentina, played at his best, while Wayne Rooney, for England, failed miserably. So far, the World Cup has already witnessed many upsets with the French and the Italian side out of it already and now England too. Below is the best FIFA World Cup 2010 team for all positions:
Goal Keeper: Eduardo da Silva (Portugal)
The goal keepers in this World Cup have suffered the most because the Jabulani ball swerves and moves quicker than the previous versions. The Portuguese number 1 has played at his best in this tournament. He has made good saves and did not let any of his opponents score a goal against him although his team was in the toughest group with Ivory Coast, Brazil and Korea DPR. Portugal have not conceded a goal in this World Cup and have the best goal difference in the world cup, courtesy Eduardo.
Right Back: Maicon Douglas Sisenando (Brazil)
The Brazilian right back, Maicon, undoubtedly is in prime form. While playing the first match of this FIFA World Cup, Brazil were finding the Korean defence frustrating until Maicon scored an outstanding goal from an unusual angle. Moreover, his ability to cross the ball, and give through balls has been amazing. Glenn Johnson (England) has been impressive too, but Maicon leads him on this position by a mile.
Centre Back: Waldo Ponce (Chile)
The Chilean centre back impressed football fans with his amazing defensive skills. He did not allow the ball go past him easy. He stood guard at his position, centre back. His team was paired up against the Swiss, who did not concede a goal since a record number of minutes, which was just a little above five hundred and fifty. The European Champions, Spain, were also against Chile in group H along with Honduras. He defended really well and their team conceded fewer goals due to his amazing defending skills. Even if the Swiss would beat Honduras in their last game, Chile would qualify because of the goal difference.
Centre Back: Diego Lugano (Uruguay)
He is as good with the ball at his feet as in the air. Lugano has been the pillar of team Uruguay and they are yet to concede a goal. We cannot forget the fact that Lucio (Brazil) and John Terry (England) have been good at this position as well, but they have conceded a goal for their team. Diego Lugano has been really good with clearing the ball and heading it away from his opponents.
Left Back: Gregory Van Der Wiel (Netherlands)
Quite a surprise for a few football fans to see his name as the best but left back, Van Der Wiel, has been amazing for the Dutch side. His ability to come forward and cross the ball from the left hand side and going back while the others are counter attacking, has been amazing. His ability to snatch the ball away from the wingers of the other teams has been outstanding as well. Honourable mentions for this position include, Ashley Cole (England), Dani Alves (Brazil) and Carlos Salsido (Mexico)
Right Midfielder: Landon Donovan (USA)
A dramatic comeback from 2-0 to a draw ending the game against Slovakia with a stoppage time goal over Algeria, London Donovan continues to mesmerise football fans time and again. He scored the 92nd minute goal against the Algerians to top the group and make it to the round of sixteen. No one deserves this position more than he does at the moment.
Central Midfielder: Elano Ralph Blumer (Brazil)
The second Brazilian to make it to the top eleven of this world cup and definitely well deserved. He scored the second goal for the Brazilian side when he finished a wonderful pass from Robinho, inside the net. Other good contenders for this position could be Xavi (Spain), Di Maria (Argentina), Veron (Argentina) and Alvero Pereira (Uruguay).
Left Midfielder: Steven Gerrard (England)
He is probably the only England player who has managed to play well and live up to his fans expectations. The England captain scored the first goal for his side, within the first five minutes of their opener. This position, for him, is undoubtedly well deserved. Other names would include Podolski (Germany) and Cristian Riveros (Paraguay).
Right Forward: Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Although he did not get to score a single goal, but most of the goals scored by Argentina were due to this very play-maker. He made great moves from the right hand side and troubled the opponents’ defence. He deserves this position more than any other player in the FIFA World Cup 2010. One more name that comes, a little close for this position would be, Jesus Nevadas (Spain).
Centre Forward: David Villa (Spain)
Football fans from all around the world would know the fact that David Villa is on top of his game. Spain have scored four goals in total, at the moment, and out of them three came from Villa; although he missed a penalty and could not score a hat-trick. If there were other names that would deserve this position, they would include Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina), Luis Fabiano (Brazil), and Robin Van Persie (Netherlands).
Left Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
The famous Ronaldo has not failed to impress his fans yet again. With his amazing dribbling and shooting skills, he scored his first ever International goal against Korea. The Captain of Portugal is doing his best for the team and helped his team get an easy seven nil win over the Koreans. His team cannot be written off out as yet as they set on to face Spain in the round of 16. Other players that deserve this position would include; Keisuke Honda (Japan), Tevez (Argentina) and Robinho (Brazil).
