FIFA World Cup 2010 Final: Robben says “Ugly” will do it for the Dutch
The Dutch winger has come out in the open and declared that an ugly win will be acceptable for the Netherlands as they take on Spain in the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Robben, who plays his club football for Bayern Munich in Germany, will be looking to avenge his club-teammates sorrow against Spain, as the Iberian giants defeated Germany by a goal to nil in the semi final.
It will be Spain’s first World Cup final appearance in the history of football. It will be a mouth watering encounter between the two European footballing giants as both the teams strive to become, World Champions for the first time in their history.
Spain arguably have played much more attractive football than the Netherlands so far in the tournament. Their ball retention capabilities have been fantastic but they have not scored many goals so far to signal their dominance.
The present Dutch squad is widely regarded by many as the least attractive of the three Dutch teams that have made it to the World Cup finals. The most entertaining of the squads was led by Johan Cruyff as the Dutch adopted the total football ideology; and by doing so, played their way to the final only to lose to the purposefully shrewd West German side in 1974 World cup final.
In the 1978 World Cup, the Dutch retained their attractive attributes even though they were devoid of their charismatic legend Johan Cruyff. They made it to the final against the host nation Argentina, which they eventually lost by a goal to nil. The present Dutch side is the first one in 32 years to make it to the final match of the tournament.
However, they have been termed as a consequentialist football side which is more concerned with the outcome of their match rather than the match itself. Robben who is an integral part of this Dutch lineup said that he would prefer to win an ugly game rather than lose a beautiful one. The ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid star also added that that Dutch still possess the capability to play attractive football.
He further stated that this Holland side relies on their good organization along with their skills on the ball. He also acknowledged that if a team is organized, usually a single goal is enough to win the match as has been the case during the world cup for his team as well as their Spanish opponents.
Robben stressed the point that the Dutch are now in the World Cup final and for him it doesn’t matter if they play beautiful football from here on in, as long as they win the match. He also boldly commented that the Dutch still intend to play good football but the result is far more important.
Robben, who has scored two goals in the tournament so far, said that everyone likes the Dutch brand of football but in the past it has not resulted in any success for them. The Dutch winger also remarked that he is still recovering from the hamstring injury that he sustained before the World Cup. He further added that he still feels the pain in his thigh sometimes but performs to the best of his abilities nonetheless.
Robben also said that he is not in contact with his ex-team mate Iker Casillas. He said that he does not need friends and that all his focus right now is on becoming a World Champion. Robben’s team mate Van Bommel said that Holland are not in the World Cup final to allow Spain to run over them. He said that they are not afraid to get their hands dirty, and will press Spain further up the field than Germany did in order to force more mistakes.
