FIFA World Cup 2010: Iniesta Thinks Torres Will Eventually Make a Future Decision
Throughout the World Cup, there has been a lot of speculation as to where the star Spanish striker Fernando Torres will end up after the summer break ends. With clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona in pursuit of the young Spaniard, Torres will find it hard to maintain his loyalties to Liverpool F.C.
Torres started two of the three group stage matches that Spain played on their way to the World Cup title. He also started the match against Portugal in the round of sixteen but was featured as a substitute against the likes of Germany in the semi-final and Holland in the final. His performances for Spain in the World Cup have been described as below par by a lot of fans and pundits.
Torres came to the World Cup at the back of an injury blighted season with Liverpool, a season in which Torres only scored 18 league goals for Liverpool. Liverpool as a consequence of their main striker’s regular injury problems, finished seventh in the league.
In the summer while Torres was at the World Cup, Liverpool parted ways with their manager Rafael Benitez and appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager. Torres being a world class player has many admirers around the World and to maintain his status as one of the best strikers in the World, the Spanish born striker will be looking to play in the UEFA Champions League in the coming season.
However, as Liverpool finished seventh and failed to qualify for the Champions League as a result, Torres might be looking for a move away from the Merseyside club. Torres also got injured in the dying minutes of the World Cup final, a match in which Torres replaced David Villa after being substituted by Vicente Del Bosque.
Torres also failed to score even a single goal during Spain’s run to the World Cup title. Torres’s Spanish team mate Andres Iniesta, told the press that Torres was fully focused on winning the World Cup with Spain and didn’t talk about his future with any of his team mates.
Iniesta stated that Torres will take a short holiday after attending his sister’s wedding and speak to Liverpool after the vacation. He also added that any club will be lucky to have the Spanish striker’s services, who was hailed as the most complete striker in World football by his Spanish attack partner David Villa.
Torres will have a scan on his groin in the next forty eight hours. There is speculation at the moment, that Torres might have torn his left abductor. If such is the case, then the young Spanish striker will be out for around about two months.
This will mean that even if he chooses to stay with Liverpool, Torres will miss the start of the season for the Merseyside club. The new premier league season starts on the 14th of August and Liverpool play their first match of the season at home to Arsenal on Sunday, 15th of August.
